Acne is the term for plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and deeper lumps referred to as cysts or nodules. Acne can occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. This common skin condition occurs when bacteria break down the oils in the skin. Irritating substances are produced that activate the body’s immune system to produce inflammation and redness. While commonly thought to be a condition of adolescence, acne can develop at any age affecting adults aged 20, 30 and even 40 or older. While not a life threatening condition, acne can be upsetting and can lead to scarring. Fortunately, many effective therapies are available that allow the dermatologists at East Coast Dermatology to develop a customized regimen that will clear existing acne and prevent future breakouts for our patients.
